Guest Blog Post: Mikaela

Please welcome one of the sweetest bloggers I've met - Mikaela. She has been so helpful throughout my blog journey and has made the experience wonderful. Even more fabulous is that she will be soon moving down to the beautiful state of Texas! Take a look at her guest blog post below and make sure to stop by her blog to say hello!

----

Hello everyone! My name is Mikaela, and I blog over at Mikaela Rae where I dump all my adventures and thoughts on life.
Thanks so much to Jasmine for having me guest post on her lovely blog today :) She's my new blog obsession so I'm quite a happy camper to get a chance to write for her myself!
Today I'm going to share with you some tips on how to brighten and "summer-ize" your home/room!
Something that's really exciting me this summer is bright bold colors. I'm getting ready to move into an apartment next year so I'm attempting to get organized now (you'll soon find out I'm freakishly organized once you get to know me).
I don't think I've ever met anyone who has told me they don't like coming home to a wonderfully styled bedroom to relax in - so hopefully I'll give you some good ideas :)
I've always been in love with mint/seafoam green/light blue hues in combination with pinks and white (hence my wedding colors). This summer, mints and peaches are very very popular - walk into any clothing store and you'll see what I mean. But there's plenty of ways to create a space that will have beautiful colors that happen to be popular that won't waste your money once the next season comes around. I've always loved these colors so I was super happy when I started seeing them everywhere - but luckily, they've always been beautiful no matter what's in style.
Pick products you love!!
They don't have to match perfectly. If you love them, most likely they'll work together. You want the things in your home to represent who you are, so don't think you can't pick something you think is beautiful just because it's not exactly what you saw in a store or online somewhere. People are attracted to things that are unique and different - so choose being you instead :)
Buy locally if you can.
Some of the coolest finds are in local boutiques and stores. I've found some of my favorite pieces from local places. And the most satisfying thing to me is making people wonder where I got something from, because it means it's something that not many people have - and as another plus my purchase has helped a local business, which I think is super important.
Less is more.
This goes for most things. But especially in the home, the less stuff you have lying around the bigger the space looks. Less clutter results in a fresher, more inviting space that not only you, but everyone who visits you will love to spend time in.
Hope that helps inspire you to do some spring cleaning and refreshing if you haven't already! I'd love for you to stop by and say hi!

Quick Meals: Avocado Chicken Salad Sandwich

I don't know about you guys but eating out for lunch gets expensive. Think about it: you spend on average $5-$10 a day on a lunch that is supposedly a "lunch special." The special may sound good at the time but when you add up all those "lunch specials" that you have on a daily basis, it adds up.

I'm not going to lie. I've been having a hard time committing to taking lunch with me to avoid spending money on lunch plus using up my gas. I try to budget and stick with only one full tank of gas for two weeks. It's been working, mainly because I usually just walk to a nearby restaurant or make a quick drive down the street. (One of the few perks of working downtown.) But these past two weeks I had to fill up my car twice. That's $50 a tank. That's $100 in two weeks. That is not within my budget plan. It's time to make a change.

I've been looking on Pinterest for ideas for quick lunches that I can pack for work and some have been delicious. I've made the Chicken and Avocado Salad with Lime and Cilantro which is my absolute favorite! My boyfriend hates avocado and cilantro, and he even liked the salad. He's officially a fan of avocado now!

I recently read on ABpetite's blog that you can substitute avocado for mayonnaise when making a chicken salad wrap. I decided to give it a try when making my usual chicken salad sandwich and I absolutely loved it. I added a pinch of light mayonnaise to help it mix. It was delicious and different. I am definitely give it another try but this time with the tortilla wrap and maybe add a little lime (mix it up a bit, something similar to the Chicken and Avocado Salad with Lime and Cilantro recipe.)

Avocado Chicken Salad:

- Chicken
- Avocado
- Celery
- Peas
- Diced Carrots
- Bread

I guess lately I've been really liking meals that include avocado. Weird.

What quick lunch meal ideas do you have?

Winston's Puppy Training

Week 3 of puppy training at Pet Smart was last Thursday and it was very successful. Not to brag or anything but I swear Winston is the smartest puppy in the class. We learned the meaning of "leave it" which at first was very difficult because he kept barking at us, then he gave up and understood what it meant (kind of.) We need to practice more on that one. I'm not convinced he has that one down yet.

We also learned how to teach him "down" which I knew he would get. My sister had tried it with her chihuahua, Sally, and Winston at the same time. So, he had a head start on this trick. The trainer was happy to see Winston pick it up so quickly. She used him as an example for the other puppies. Joseph and I were proud puppy parents.

Repetition is key in puppy training, so this past weekend we made sure we practiced. We went over all tricks - up, sit and down. Take a look!

We were so excited. Our plan is to teach him how to roll over next on our own, outside of the class. I feel like all the tricks he has down are because of us, not because of the class. Joseph taught him up, I taught him how to sit and my sister showed us how to teach him down. He hasn't picked up the "loose leash" or "leave it" or "settle" which is all from the class. I'm starting to think the $109 was not worth it but it's an experience and we're only half way through the course. We need to be positive. I'm sure there is a lot more to learn.

Two things we need to work on:

+ potty training again
+ barking / settling down

He was doing so good with potty training but then all of a sudden he started getting in the habit of going in the living room and now on the bathroom carpet! We're thinking of buying him a crate to leave him in overnight. We spoiled him too much in letting him sleep in the bed. I take him outside first thing in the morning when he stays the night at my house, so he's never had an accident at my place. But with Joseph - he goes all over the apartment living room. Joseph doesn't like waking up earlier to take him outside but after the many accidents, he's starting to really consider my advice.

The puppy barking. Winston talks back a lot. If we're eating at the dinner table, he'll sit and bark at us. If we're watching tv, he'll sit there and just bark at us. When he's getting groomed, oh yes - he barks at all the grooming employees. We get him groomed at Pet Smart (Can you tell we love Pet Smart?) and every grooming report card we get back says: "He's fiesty. He protests a lot. He used foul puppy language, puppy bad words that puppies should not use. He's cute but he's a lot to handle." We don't know what to do with this issue. We've brought it up with the trainer but she hasn't been helpful. Any suggestions?

How can this cutie be so much to handle? Look at him!

On another note...
If you haven't done so already - check out my intro post over on Mikaela Rae's blog! I am so happy to have been given the opportunity to intro post on her blog. I'm new to blogging and she's been very helpful throughout my blog journey.

Maxi Skirt, Denim Vest, Fedora Hats - It's Summertime!

I went a little cray cray at Banana Republic this past weekend.

40% off all shorts, sleeveless shirts and short-sleeve cardigans!

It was a sale I could not pass up. I went into Banana Republic with one purpose only - to find the red maxi skirt that I've had my eye on for the past week. Unfortunately they didn't have it in my size in stock so I had to order online. While I waited, my eyes were wandering throughout the entire store. The sale was calling my name. I told myself - well, I do need new work clothes. I also need new outfits for the upcoming family trip (that's not until mid-July!) so, I gave in. I had a pile of clothes to try out. Numerous outfit ideas were running through my head. Everything I tried on I fell in love with. I'm pretty sure I was shopping for an hour. When I got to the check out and saw the overall total (even after the promo and applying a coupon I had) I soon realized - I have a shopping problem. I am a shopaholic

I think it's time to ease down a bit because there is no longer room in my closet. Eh, who am I kidding? A girl loves her clothes and I love spending my money where I can see it - in my closet.

The red maxi skirt is on its way to be delivered to my lovely home but I'm already thinking of some cute outfit ideas for a Texas summer day out in the sun. I never thought I'd like maxi skirts or maxi dresses but after I bought my first maxi skirt from Arden B (see post here) I thought I'd give the maxi skirt a try.

I'm ready for summer! I'm ready to try new summer outfit ideas. :)

And mirror ball trophy goes to...

....Kellie Pickler & Derek Hough!

Ahhh!!! For the first time in I don't know how many seasons, I agree with the results. I am glad I decided to watch this season. After the results of the All Star season, I was against watching the show. And previous seasons, too! Shawn Johnson during the All Star season. Sabrina Bryan when she danced with Mark Ballas. But when I heard Kellie Pickler would be on the show and that Derek Hough was returning (he had said his last season was the All Star season with Shawn Johnson) AND they were paired, I just couldn't resist.

It was a great season to watch. Kellie Pickler was absolutely amazing. I have been a Pickler fan since day one. Since her American Idol days and her concerts at small venues like Cowboys Dancehall, really interacting with her fans during her shows. I am happy to see one of my favorite contestants win.

Okay, okay. I'm done watching competition shows.

BYOB Painting

May has been so good to me in so many ways. It was another eventful weekend filled with new experiences. I've been feeling very spontaneous. As many of you may or may not know, I was in a sorority in college. Therefore you may find a lot of "sister" talk in my blog entries. In a sorority you truly find a strong sisterhood and leave college with some strong friendships.

Friday night we decided to have a sisters night out at The Royal Canvas, all thanks to Groupon. We bought a great deal in January and almost forgot about it! It was about to expire. It was a great, relaxing experience. I haven't held a paint brush in 2-3 years! (I took a painting class in college.) I wasn't completely satisfied with my painting but it was fun. I would definitely do it again. It would've been a great mother's day gift! Next year. :) See the pictures below! Excuse the poor quality of the photos. These were all taken on my iPhone.

Saturday night my boyfriend and I attended our very first San Antonio Scorpions game. Thanks to my work, we had some great seats. We enjoyed the game from the suite box and the weather was perfect. We're more into basketball but it was nice to get to experience a soccer game. We really grew to appreciate the sport. My boyfriend really got into the game, cheering and screaming. I told him - "I didn't know you were into soccer or even knew anything about it." His response? "I don't. It just reminds me of FIFA. It's like I'm in the FIFA video game." Boyfriends, they say the darnest things. ;)

Sunday was a day of rest. We enjoyed delicious barbeque cooked by my dad and a great win by the Spurs. They DOMINATED! GO SPURS GO! The San Antonio Spurs are definitely going to the finals. I can feel it.

Hope everybody had a wonderful weekend!

In Honor of Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day!

My momma is the most loving, giving and patient woman in the world. I am thankful to have a mother who supports me in every decision I make and believes in me. She sacrifices so much for her family. Today (and every day) is her dedicated to her.

This year I wanted to the entire city to know how much she means to us, so I bought a Mother's Day ad for her in the newspaper. She's like my sister, extremely shy and finds these things embarrassing but what the heck. It's a gift she would've never expected and I wanted to take her by surprise this year with unique and original gifts. (Plus, I think she has enough Vera Bradley aprons to last her a while.)

And I was right - she blushed and couldn't believe it. She found it quite embarrassing but smiled about it. She's now enjoying much needed quiet time and a nap before dinner where I will present her with her second gift - a framed art design that lists her daughters' birth dates that reads "Some of my greatest blessings call me MOM" but in Spanish. (For those of you who don't know, my parents are originally from Mexico. My mom speaks only Spanish.)

I'll update the post with a photo of her reaction (if she lets me. She doesn't like pictures either.)

Hope everybody enjoys Mother's Day with their mommas!

Texas weather is cray cray!

In Texas, it's rare when you can wear a scarf during the month of May. I've been patiently waiting for that Texas heat to make a weekend trip to float the river. But I understand we need the rain, so I will keep waiting. Bring it on! Medina Lake could really use some rain. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the rain by staying in and playing dress up / cleaning out my closet.

A New Found Love: Austin, Texas

Happy Monday! I am a happy, happy camper because I had such an amazing weekend. It was First Friday which could only mean one thing: Pub Run. The theme was “Favorite NBA team” so of course, I was sporting my “Go For Cinco” San Antonio Spurs shirt. GO SPURS GO! Saturday was a very relaxing day. My boyfriend’s work had a bowling fundraising event. I have not stepped foot in a bowling alley since Lord knows when! I was a little rusty, so rusty that I insisted on using bumpers. Don’t judge. We asked our lovely married friends Candace and Alex to join us. My boyfriend’s family was in town so his little brother joined us, too. It was a great way to spend our Saturday afternoon. My boyfriend showed off his bowling skills and beat us in both games. He’s such a small town kid! We didn’t get the memo that it was 80’s theme. That explained the one team next to our lane all decked out in 80’s attire.

Sunday was very spontaneous. My friend Gaby and I decided to buy Jason Aldean tickets last week for his concert in Austin, Texas. We figured – why not? Despite being exhausted from Friday’s Pub Run and Saturday’s bowling, I was determined to close out my 3-day weekend (I had Friday off) with a bang! It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon to walk down South Congress and enjoy the atmosphere. We met up with one of our sorority sisters who now lives in Austin and ate at Guero’s. Lucky for us, Hey Cupcake! was right across the street. It was a must do after our delicious lunch. Guero’s fish tacos were amazing and their margaritas were delicious. It was Cinco de Mayo, we had to! After a great lunch and awesome cupcake dessert, we had to walk it off by shopping. You would think living in San Antonio only about 80 miles away from Austin that I would visit often but no. I seriously fell in love with the city. Their food, small boutiques, music, atmosphere and the Domain – it was all beautiful. I am in love. I may just have to move there someday.

After spending what seemed like hours at H&M, we headed over to the Austin360 Amphitheater for the concert. It was such a great show. Thomas Rhett and Jake Owen opened up. I love country artists because they put on such a good show. They’re very down to earth, chill and interact with their fans. Jake Owen took photos with fans, grab some of their phones and recorded the audience and himself singing. Jason Aldean was just amazing from beginning to end. I will say though, he tricked the audience into thinking Kelly Clarkson was there performing during “Don’t You Wanna Stay.” I would post the video but you can hear my friend and I freak out, believing it was really her. Technology these days! It’s scary.

Overall it was an AMAZING, but I mean AMAZING show. We had great seats for buying them so last minute. I didn’t know the amphitheater was new and had just opened. It was outdoors and a great set up. We’re looking forward to going back in August for Keith Urban. It was also conveniently located off of the TX toll road 130.

Austin, you swept me off my feet. Weekend, you were great. May is being good to me already.
