Be thankful.

I hope everybody had a lovely Thanksgiving, surrounded by family and friends. This year Thanksgiving was extra special for me. J's family and grandparents came into town to celebrate Thanksgiving. For the first time in years I was able to spend a holiday with his family, so we were very thankful for that opportunity. It difficult when his side of the family is from a different city. We spent the first half of the day with his family and the second half with my family. As soon as we finished dinner with my family, it was nap time and catching the last part of the Dallas Cowboys game whereas my mom and sister decided to be brave and hit the stores for Black Friday. No, thank you.

And I'm loving the holiday decorations around town. Christmas is definitely one of my favorite holidays. Who doesn't love Christmas? Lights. Christmas Carols. Joy and Happiness. Family. Giving. Christmas Movies. Harry Potter weekend on ABC family. It's the most wonderful time of the year! :)

Weekend Recap + Catching Fire

I cannot begin to explain how excited I was to step into the theatre to finally see Catching Fire after what has felt like a million years of waiting. I could not be happier with the movie. I want to go back and see it again. It also reminded me how much I love Josh Hutcherson. Yes, I am Team Peta. If I could, I would go see it again right now because that's how excited I got about the movie again. I think the last time I got excited about a film based on a book series was Harry Potter. (Which btw, someone played a cruel joke and there was an article floating around Facebook that J.K. Rowling was writing an 8th book.)

That pretty much sums up my weekend. Friday night was movie night. The rest of the weekend was nothing but sleep, sleep and sleep. The boyfriend was sick this weekend. But I did want to share my lovely masterpiece thanks to Pinterest. Friday we had a potluck and I needed to think of something quick and easy to contribute because I had night class the night before. I rushed to HEB after class, picked up the necessary ingredients and ta-da! :)

Hope everybody has a lovely weekend!

Discovering Your Blessings

What does it mean to be blessed? Yesterday I discovered a bigger meaning behind the word. I have always been thankful of the many blessings, big or small, that God has granted me and my family but yesterday was a special day. Yesterday I discovered how blessed I am to have a father who is kind, caring, strong and loving. I have always known this but yesterday it made me appreciate his work even more. He is loved by many, not just at home but also at his school. Last month my grandfather passed away suddenly and it broke my heart to see my dad, someone who is always smiling, so devastated by a loss but that frown was quickly turned upside down by the unending love and support from his school. It amazes me how strong a community is and how quickly people can come together to help. I've seen similar acts of community in my sorority, coming together as one sisterhood, but yesterday I saw a different form of community help. One of my dad's co-workers said, "What other workplace would come together like this for a fundraiser to help someone? We love you." That, right now, just brought tears to my eyes but I held it in. Mainly because there were kids running around and my dad was just all smiles the entire night. I am extremely thankful for the love and support my dad has at his school. I can only dream to be part of such a great community for many years some day and wish to be at least half the caring and loving person that he is. In preparation of Thanksgiving and giving thanks, today more than ever I am thankful for my family and our support system.

Be thankful! Happy Thursday. :)

Weekend Recap

It was time to take a break from work and school, and what a perfect weekend to do that.

Friday | it was a sorority sister's 25th birthday weekend. The big 2-5, a quarter of a century. It's scary to think that one by one we are all reaching that point. Life passes by so quickly. We enjoyed a night out in the town which made me realize, I don't get out much. I don't know a lot of these new clubs. I find myself always having to GPS all these places because I'm so out of the loop. But it was nice getting the chance to go out with all the sisters.

Saturday two of my high school best friends wanted to enjoy a night of good old country music which I couldn't say no to. J joined me even though he doesn't like country. He's such a sweetheart. He even took me out to the dance floor for a song.

Sunday | was back to study mode with a little bit of The Walking Dead time, of course. And what's a weekend recap without a photo of Winston? Lately he's been chilling on the couch like a cat. I swear he was a cat in a previous life.

Get To Know Me (More)

(It was the day we were shooting the Harlem Shake video at work.)

With the big blog move and name change, I thought it would be a good idea to put together a list of some of my favorite posts for new (and old) followers to get a quick little summary of who I am and what I like to blog about. Sometimes the about me page just isn't enough and who has the time to go through pages and pages of old posts? In a pinch, below are a few of my favorite posts that best define me. Grab a cup of hot coffee (because heck, it is cold outside y'all! 45 degrees is not normal in Texas!) and get to know me better!

And everything about the little fur ball that fills my heart with joy, Winston. From the day the boyfriend and I first met our little Winston to our puppy training adventures.

Blog Transfer Fail + Weekend Recap

Hello, new blog. Goodbye...followers? Unfortunately I lost all my followers on GFC and Bloglovin (and even all my old comments!) because I didn't plan ahead of time. I was too excited about the big move that I completely forgot about the consequences. I just went into my settings, renamed my blog and hit save. If someone knows of a simple solution, let me know! Mega fail! I've been doing some research and I am determined to find a solution. Otherwise, I'm going to just have to start from scratch. Any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Anything?

As for the weekend, it involved a box of tissues, a blanket and a trip to the grocery store to stock up on orange juice and Emergen-C in hopes that this cold would go away as quickly as possible. But it turns out being sick over the weekend wasn't so bad after all. I got the chance to spend some quality time with my two favorite boys while catching up on some of my favorite shows.

Day 8 of the Thankful Project: Words

I was going to wait until tomorrow to hop onto the Thankful Project by Kenzie from Chasing Happy, but I couldn’t let today’s topic pass by: words.

Words can be used to express your feelings, whether they be good or bad. Unfortunately, sometimes words are misused and can be hurtful. It doesn’t always have to be that way. Words can be, and should be, seen a positive. Today I want to share a book that I stumbled upon a year ago and continue to refer to when times get tough. Rather than browsing through “life quotes” on Pinterest (which, don’t get me wrong, I love them because there are some pretty encouraging words out there!) I go to a little book called “It’s Never Too Late: 171 Simple Acts to Change Your Life”

You may remember it from my “What’s in my handbag?” post. The book reminds me that it is never too late to do anything. Start fresh. Start a new career. Work out. Change your routine. Forgive. Let go. Fall in love. Make memories. Pretty much anything and everything you could possible think of.

The book never fails to surprise me with the great words of encouragement. Books that contain powerful words of encouragement are constant reminders that all things are possible. I highly recommend this book to keep by your nightstand or carry in your bag. The book includes 171 simple acts to change your life, below an example of one:

It’s never too late…to learn from mistakes.

There are several other small books with great words of encouragements, notes and reminders that I go to. I will have to make a note to blog about those other books in the future.

Do you have a book you always go for powerful words of encouragement?

Change is good.

As you can see, Southern Cafe is no longer the name of my blog. Welcome to - A Pinch of Jasmine. I decided to completely redesign and rename my blog to best fit my personality and style. The blog is to share just a fraction of my life through blog posts and photos. I'm happy with the changes. And what better way to kick off the new look than on a beautiful Friday. The weather is chilly in Texas, it's time to go outside and enjoy it all weekend long.
